Fundamental Duties and Responsible Citizenship in India

Abstract

Fundamental Duties form an important part of the constitutional framework of India and provide a set of civic responsibilities expected from citizens. Incorporated into the Constitution through the Forty-Second Amendment in 1976 and subsequently expanded by the Eighty-Sixth Amendment, the duties emphasize respect for constitutional values, national unity, harmony, environmental protection, scientific temper, public property, and educational responsibility. Although Fundamental Duties are generally non-justiciable in the same manner as Fundamental Rights, they have educational, ethical, and interpretive significance. This paper examines nine major dimensions of Fundamental Duties and responsible citizenship, including their constitutional basis, civic values, national integration, environmental responsibility, social harmony, education, public conduct, democratic participation, and contemporary relevance.
